PRODUCT INTRODUCTION
R4 Hose — Suction and Discharge, 3/4 Inch to 4 Inch
SAE 100R4 is the line that has to do two jobs: it is filled by a pump and then emptied again, sometimes in the same circuit. Eight codes from 19 to 102 mm inside diameter, all at a 3:1 margin.
The rating falls with bore over the first five sizes, from 21 bar at 3/4 inch to 17, 14, 10.5 and 7 bar at 2 inch. Then it stops falling: the 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch codes are all 4 bar working with 12 bar burst, so above 2-1/2 inch the size is a pure flow decision.
Bend radius runs 100 mm to 550 mm and mass 0.95 to 5.21 kg/m, with every code supplied in 61 m lengths. A 4 inch line at 5.21 kg/m is a two-person lift at the dock rather than a coil on a drum.

WHY THIS HOSE
Why the Top Three Rows Are Identical
A suction line is sized by the bore it has to fill and empty, not by a pressure it never sees.
4 Bar on Three Sizes
The 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch codes are all 4 bar working with 12 bar burst. Above 2 inches the class stops mattering.
21 bar at 3/4 Inch
The smallest code is the highest rated, at 21 bar with 63 bar burst, on a 34.4 mm outside diameter.
21 to 4 Bar
A steady decline across five sizes: 21, 17, 14, 10.5 and 7 bar. Each step is a step in bore, not in class.
3:1 Throughout
63 on 21, 51 on 17, 12 on 4. The ratio holds on every row including the three that share a rating.
Arc 100 to 550 mm
The 3/4 inch code turns in 100 mm; the 4 inch code needs 550 mm, which is a metre of clear space to empty a line.
5.21 kg/m at 4 Inch
Against 0.95 kg/m at 3/4 inch. On a tanker or a dredge the large codes are handled, not carried.
CONSTRUCTION
Wall That Holds Its Shape Empty
Inner Tube
Oil-resistant synthetic rubber, bored 19 mm to 102 mm. The tube is sized for the bore it has to fill rather than for the pressure it sees.
Reinforcement
Wire reinforcement sized for a 21 bar working pressure at the smallest bore and 4 bar at the largest, with burst at three times in both cases.
Cover
Abrasion-resistant cover, outside diameter 34.4 mm at 3/4 inch through 120.2 mm at 4 inch. It takes the drag of a line being dragged.
APPLICATIONS
Where R4 Is Used
Hydraulic Return Lines
19 and 25 mm at 21 and 17 bar, the sizes that sit closest to the pump.
Tank Truck and Tanker Suction
3/4 to 2 inch, where the line has to empty without collapsing.
Dredge and Slurry Lines
3 and 4 inch at 4 bar, chosen purely for the volume they can move.
Oil Discharge to Tanker
1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inch at 14 and 10.5 bar, on 190 and 220 mm arcs.
Suction and Discharge Combined
One body for both directions, which is what the R4 designation covers.
Workshop and Plant Air-Vacuum
Small bores at 21 bar where a suction line is short and light.
HIGH-END INDUSTRY DIRECTIONS
What Suction-Line Buyers Ask
The questions are about emptying the line and about how it behaves when it is full of nothing but air.
① Vacuum Resistance suction hose
Trend: Buyers ask what happens when the line is empty.
Dohose: Wire reinforcement, so the bore holds at 3:1 from 21 bar down to 4 bar.
② Volume Not Pressure large bore hose
Trend: Above 2 inches the bore is set by volume.
Dohose: Three codes at the same 4 bar and 12 bar burst.
③ Wear on Rough Ground abrasion resistant hose
Trend: Suction lines are dragged across the ground.
Dohose: Cover and outside diameter published per row, 34.4 to 120.2 mm.
④ Handling Weight heavy hose
Trend: A 4 inch line is handled, not carried.
Dohose: 5.21 kg/m at 102 mm, against 0.95 at 19 mm.
⑤ Clearance to Empty hose routing
Trend: The arc has to let the line drain.
Dohose: Minimum bend radius 100 mm to 550 mm, published per row.
⑥ One Length per Bay long length hose
Trend: Couplings on the ground are avoided.
Dohose: 61 m on all eight codes, which is 200 ft.

FAQ
R4 Hose — Ten Questions
What is the working pressure of R4?
It depends on the bore, from 21 bar at 3/4 inch down through 17, 14, 10.5 and 7 bar, and then 4 bar on the 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch codes. Burst is three times working on every row, from 63 bar down to 12 bar.
R4 vs R6 — which for a return line?
R4 where the line has to be emptied as well as filled, R6 for a plain return. R4 is a wire-reinforced body rated 21 bar at 3/4 inch up to 4 inch at 4 bar, while R6 stops at 19 mm and stays at 20 bar.
Can R4 replace a pressure hose on a working line?
Not on a high-pressure line. The best code here is 21 bar with 63 bar burst, and above 2-1/2 inch the rating is only 4 bar. A working line at 200 bar needs a four-spiral or braided body instead.
What are the bore sizes and bend radii?
Eight codes from 19 to 102 mm inside diameter, which is 3/4 inch to 4 inch, with minimum bend radius 100, 150, 190, 220, 300, 380, 450 and 550 mm in the same order.
Why do the three largest codes have the same rating?
Because above 2-1/2 inch the bore is chosen for volume, not for pressure. The 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch codes are all 4 bar working with 12 bar burst, on outside diameters of 81.6, 94.4 and 120.2 mm.
Why is the burst margin 3:1 on this range?
Because it is a suction and discharge class rather than a working pressure class. The table publishes 63 bar burst on 21 bar working at the small end and 12 on 4 at the large, and the ratio is the same on every row.
Which code for a tanker discharge line?
The 25 or 32 mm code at 17 or 14 bar on a 150 or 190 mm arc. A discharge line is sized for the volume moved and for how fast it has to empty, and the 3:1 margin covers the surge.
Which code for a 3 inch slurry line?
The 76 mm code at 4 bar with 12 bar burst, on a 450 mm arc at 3.85 kg/m. Above 2-1/2 inch all three large codes share that rating, so the bore is the only choice left.
What is the minimum order and the longest length?
100 metres per size, cut to length, with a maximum single length of 61 metres on all eight codes, which is 200 ft in the length column. Production runs about 20 days from confirmation.
What does R4 cost per metre?
Price follows the bore: 0.95 kg/m at 3/4 inch, 1.16 at 1 inch, 1.85 at 1-1/2, 2.36 at 2 inch and 5.21 kg/m at 4 inch. Send bore, length, ends and destination for a firm figure the same working day.
