PRODUCT INTRODUCTION
4SP vs 4SH — Same Four Spirals, Two Envelopes
Both are EN 856 four-spiral hose, built the same way: four wire layers wound in alternating pairs over an oil-resistant tube. The difference between them is not construction quality, it is the bore the construction can carry.
Our 4SP table runs from 6.2 to 16.7 mm inside diameter, 45.0 MPa (450 bar) at 1/4 inch falling to 35.0 MPa at 5/8. Our 4SH range begins at 18.6 mm and runs to 52 mm, 42.0 MPa (420 bar) at 3/4 inch falling to 25.0 MPa at 2 inch.
The two tables do not overlap by a single row. So the decision is rarely 4SP against 4SH on pressure: it is which of the two envelopes your bore falls into. Below 5/8 inch only 4SP exists, above 3/4 inch only 4SH, and the pressure you can hold falls with bore in both.

WHY THIS HOSE
Why These Two Are Not Interchangeable
A comparison page usually ends in a recommendation. Here it ends in a boundary, because the ranges hand over at 5/8 inch.
16.7 mm Is the Line
The largest 4SP inside diameter is 15.5 to 16.7 mm. The smallest 4SH is 18.6 to 19.8 mm. Nothing sits between them.
450 bar, Then 420
4SP holds 45.0 MPa at 1/4 inch. 4SH holds 42.0 MPa at 3/4 inch, only 30 bar less at three times the bore.
Pressure Falls With Bore
4SP ends at 35.0 MPa on 5/8 inch, 4SH ends at 25.0 MPa on 2 inch. Both lose headroom as the bore grows.
Arc Grows Faster Than Bore
150 mm at the 1/4 inch 4SP code, 280 mm at the 3/4 inch 4SH code, 700 mm at 2 inch. Routing dominates above 1 inch.
Two Rows at 1-1/4 Inch
4SH lists 32.5 MPa and 35.0 MPa at the same 2.77 kg/m and 460 mm arc. Same dimensions, different pressure class.
5.06 kg/m at 2 Inch
The 2 inch 4SH code weighs 5.06 kg/m. Above 1-1/2 inch, support spacing becomes an engineering task, not an accessory.
CONSTRUCTION
Four Spirals, Thicker Wall as Bore Grows
Inner Tube
Oil-resistant synthetic rubber. The 4SP table covers 6.2 to 16.7 mm inside diameter, and 4SH picks up at 18.6 mm.
Reinforcement
Four spiral-wound high-tensile steel wire layers in both. The reinforcement layer measures 14.1 to 24.6 mm on 4SP and grows with the bore on 4SH.
Cover
Abrasion-resistant cover, taking outside diameter to 17.1 to 29 mm across the 4SP codes and up to 66.5 to 69.7 mm on the 2 inch 4SH code.
APPLICATIONS
Where Each Envelope Belongs
Boom and Arm Cylinders
1/4 and 3/8 lines at 445 to 450 bar, where 150 mm and 180 mm arcs fit inside the boom section.
Main Pressure Headers
1/2 inch at 41.5 MPa on a 230 mm arc, the usual size for a machine main line.
Large Cylinder Feeds
3/4 inch and 1 inch on 4SH at 420 and 380 bar, where 4SP does not reach.
Piling and Drilling Rigs
1-1/4 inch at 460 mm arc, using the 35.0 MPa row where the duty sits above 32.5 MPa.
Dredging and Marine
1-1/2 and 2 inch at 290 and 250 bar, where 5.06 kg/m needs engineered supports.
Long Runs in Fixed Plant
Skid and test-bench piping where the arc is not constrained and weight is borne by steel, not by hand.
HIGH-END INDUSTRY DIRECTIONS
Why the Spiral Envelope Keeps Widening
Hydraulic systems keep moving pressure outward: larger cylinders, longer strokes, higher flow. The spiral range follows.
① Bigger Cylinders high pressure hose
Trend: Bores above 1 inch are now common on mobile lifting equipment.
Dohose: 4SH covers 18.6 to 52 mm at 42.0 MPa down to 25.0 MPa.
② Flow Rather Than Pressure large bore hose
Trend: Some circuits are sized for flow, not for pressure, and land on 1-1/2 inch.
Dohose: 4SH holds 29.0 MPa at 38 mm with a 560 mm arc.
③ Impulse at Large Bore high impulse hose
Trend: Spiral construction is specified where large-bore lines cycle under load.
Dohose: Four layers at 168.0 MPa burst on the 3/4 inch 4SH code.
④ Two Classes, One Size dual rated hose
Trend: Buyers want the highest rating available at a fixed diameter.
Dohose: 1-1/4 inch is listed at both 32.5 and 35.0 MPa with identical 2.77 kg/m.
⑤ Support and Routing heavy hose
Trend: Above 1-1/2 inch, clamp spacing is queried with the hose.
Dohose: The 2 inch code runs 5.06 kg/m with a 700 mm minimum arc, so spacing follows the arc.
⑥ Assembly Rather Than Coil crimped hose
Trend: Large-bore spiral is bought as tested assemblies.
Dohose: Crimped and pressure-tested in-house up to 2 inch, with flange and SAE ends.

FAQ
4SP vs 4SH — Ten Selection Questions
4SP vs 4SH — is the construction different?
No, both are four spiral-wound steel wire layers over an oil-resistant tube, to EN 856. What differs is the envelope: 4SP covers 6.2 to 16.7 mm inside diameter and holds 45.0 MPa (450 bar) at 1/4 inch, while 4SH starts at 18.6 mm and holds 42.0 MPa at 3/4 inch.
Can 4SH replace 4SP where it was specified?
Only if the bore is 3/4 inch or larger, because the ranges do not overlap. The largest 4SP code is a 15.5 to 16.7 mm inside diameter, and the smallest 4SH code starts at 18.6 mm. A 1/2 inch line specified on 4SP has no 4SH equivalent to step up to.
What is the 5/8 inch 4SP rating?
The 5/8 code is rated 35.0 MPa (350 bar) with 140.0 MPa (20,305 psi) minimum burst, on a 15.5 to 16.7 mm inside diameter. Minimum bend radius is 250 mm and mass is 1.06 kg/m, the heaviest and widest of the four 4SP codes.
What happens to pressure at 2 inch on 4SH?
It falls to 25.0 MPa (250 bar) with 100.0 MPa burst, on a 50.4 to 52 mm inside diameter, at 5.06 kg/m and a 700 mm minimum arc. For comparison, the largest 4SP code holds 35.0 MPa at a 15.5 to 16.7 mm bore, so tripling the bore costs 100 bar of rating.
Why does 4SP stop at 5/8 inch?
Because four spiral layers over a bore above 16.7 mm need a wall that the 4SP class does not define, so the standard hands over to 4SH. That is why the 4SP table ends at 250 mm bend radius and the 4SH table begins at 280 mm rather than continuing the same curve.
Why does 4SH lose pressure as the bore grows?
Hoop stress rises with diameter at a fixed wall, so the rating falls from 42.0 MPa at 3/4 inch to 25.0 MPa at 2 inch. Burst follows the same line, 168.0 MPa down to 100.0 MPa, so the 4:1 margin is preserved across the range.
Which row for 1-1/4 inch at 320 bar?
Either, but choose the 35.0 MPa row if the duty is above 325 bar. 4SH lists 32.5 MPa and 35.0 MPa at the same 2.77 kg/m and the same 460 mm arc, so the dimensions are identical and only the class differs.
Which class for a 1/2 inch line at 400 bar?
4SP. The 1/2 code is rated 41.5 MPa (415 bar) with 166.0 MPa burst on a 12.3 to 13.5 mm inside diameter, at a 230 mm arc and 0.9 kg/m. 4SH does not offer that bore, so the choice is not a comparison at all.
What is the minimum order and lead time?
100 m per size, cut to length, on 4SP from 6.2 mm to 16.7 mm inside diameter. Production runs about 20 days from confirmation, and both classes ship crimped and pressure-tested with metric, BSP, JIC, ORFS or flange ends.
What do 4SP and 4SH cost per metre?
Price follows the wall: 4SP runs 0.55 kg/m at 1/4 inch to 1.06 kg/m at 5/8 inch, while 4SH starts at 1.64 kg/m at 3/4 inch and reaches 5.06 kg/m at 2 inch. Samples are cut free, and a firm figure follows bore, length, ends and destination.
