PRODUCT INTRODUCTION
2SN vs 4SP — 50 mm of Bend Radius, 115 bar at 3/8
This is the most common upgrade decision in mobile hydraulics, and it is usually framed as braid against spiral. The dimensional answer is simpler than the framing suggests: every step from 2SN to 4SP costs exactly 50 mm of minimum bend radius.
At 1/4 inch, 2SN is rated 40.0 MPa (400 bar) on a 100 mm arc, and 4SP on the same 6.2 to 7.0 mm bore is rated 45.0 MPa (450 bar) on 150 mm. That is 50 bar for 50 mm. At 3/8 inch the same step gives 33.0 MPa against 44.5 MPa, which is 115 bar for the same 50 mm.
So the bore decides whether the upgrade pays. Below 3/8 inch you pay the full routing penalty for 50 bar; at 3/8 inch and above the spiral starts to return real pressure. The 4SP range also begins at 6.2 mm, so the 3/16 and 5/16 2SN codes have no spiral counterpart at all.
Data Display
This is the most common upgrade decision in mobile hydraulics. 2SN is a two-wire braid hose; 4SP is a four-layer spiral hose to EN 856.
2SN vs 4SP, matched by inside diameter
Each cell is working pressure · minimum bend radius · mass per metre. Only two bores are offered in both classes, and each upgrade costs exactly 50 mm of arc.

WHY THIS HOSE
The Four Numbers Behind the Upgrade
An upgrade is only worth it if the pressure gain exceeds the routing cost. On this pair, that ratio changes with bore.
50 bar at 1/4 Inch
2SN is 40.0 MPa on a 100 mm arc, 4SP is 45.0 MPa on 150 mm. Half a pressure class for a 50 per cent wider loop.
115 bar at 3/8 Inch
2SN is 33.0 MPa at 130 mm, 4SP is 44.5 MPa at 180 mm. Same arc penalty, more than twice the pressure gain.
Exactly 50 mm, Every Time
100 to 150 mm and 130 to 180 mm. The penalty is constant, which makes it easy to price against available space.
4SP Starts at 6.2 mm
Two 2SN codes, 3/16 and 5/16, have no spiral equivalent. For those the decision is 2SN or a different product line.
Both Hold 4:1
166.0 MPa burst on 41.5 MPa, 180.0 MPa on 45.0 MPa. Neither class buys pressure by thinning the margin.
Weight Follows the Arc
0.42 to 0.55 kg/m at 1/4 inch and 0.6 to 0.75 kg/m at 3/8. The heavier hose is also the one that needs more space.
CONSTRUCTION
Two Braids Against Four Spirals
Inner Tube
Oil-resistant synthetic rubber, 4.6 mm to 10.1 mm inside diameter on 2SN, the same bores 4SP covers from 6.2 mm upward.
Reinforcement
Two braided wire layers on 2SN, measuring 10.6 to 17.3 mm. Four spiral-wound layers on 4SP, measuring 14.1 to 24.6 mm, which is why the wall and the arc both grow.
Cover
Abrasion-resistant cover. Outside diameter is 16 to 21.7 mm on 2SN and 17.1 to 29 mm on 4SP at the bores the two share.
APPLICATIONS
When to Pay the 50 mm
Boom Cylinders
Dead-heading at end of stroke on 3/8 lines: 44.5 MPa on 4SP covers a spike that 33.0 MPa on 2SN would not.
Pilot Circuits
3/16 lines at 200 bar stay on 2SN at a 90 mm arc, because 4SP does not offer that bore.
Outrigger Legs
Short, high-pressure strokes where 100 mm on 2SN already fits and there is no room to give 50 mm away.
Harvesters and Forwarders
Heads that run 400 bar continuously on 3/8 hose, where the arc penalty lands in open frame space.
Machine Tools
Clamp circuits at 450 bar on 1/4 hose, provided the routing can carry a 150 mm loop.
Fixed Plant
Skid piping where space is not the constraint, so the spiral pressure class costs nothing but weight.
HIGH-END INDUSTRY DIRECTIONS
Why the Upgrade Question Keeps Coming Up
Machines are being re-rated faster than they are being redesigned, so the same clamps have to carry more pressure.
① Re-rated Circuits high pressure hose
Trend: Existing machines are uprated to 450 bar to gain lifting capacity.
Dohose: 4SP holds 45.0 MPa at 1/4 inch and 44.5 MPa at 3/8, both at a 4:1 burst.
② Space as the Binding Limit compact routing
Trend: Buyers now state available arc before they state pressure.
Dohose: The 50 mm penalty is published per bore, 100 to 150 and 130 to 180 mm.
③ Impulse Life high impulse hose
Trend: Spiral construction is specified where pressure cycles rather than holds.
Dohose: Four spiral layers at 178.0 MPa burst on the 3/8 code.
④ Mixed Fleets stock hose
Trend: Fleets want one pressure class per machine family, not per hose.
Dohose: 2SN covers 4.6 to 10.1 mm at 33.0 to 41.5 MPa from one drum.
⑤ Weight on the Boom lightweight hose
Trend: Every kg on a moving boom is lost payload.
Dohose: 2SN is 0.42 kg/m at 1/4 inch against 0.6 kg/m at 3/8, and 4SP adds 0.13 to 0.15 kg/m to that.
⑥ Documentation traceable hose
Trend: Re-rated machines need the new class recorded against the certificate.
Dohose: Batch, pressure class and test date are marked on the body.

FAQ
2SN vs 4SP — Ten Upgrade Questions
2SN vs 4SP — what do I actually gain?
Between 50 and 115 bar, depending on bore, and it costs 50 mm of bend radius either way. At 1/4 inch 2SN is 40.0 MPa on 100 mm and 4SP is 45.0 MPa on 150 mm; at 3/8 inch 2SN is 33.0 MPa at 130 mm and 4SP is 44.5 MPa at 180 mm.
Can 4SP replace 2SN without changing the brackets?
No, the arc grows by 50 mm at every shared bore, from 100 to 150 mm at 1/4 inch and from 130 to 180 mm at 3/8. The outside diameter also grows, 17.7 mm to a 17.1 to 18.7 mm band at 1/4 inch, so the clamp bore changes as well as its position.
What are the 3/8 inch ratings on both classes?
The 3/8 code is rated 33.0 MPa (330 bar) on 2SN with 132.0 MPa burst, and 44.5 MPa (445 bar) on 4SP with 178.0 MPa burst. Both sit on a 9.3 to 10.1 mm inside diameter, and the minimum bend radius is 130 mm against 180 mm.
What is the smallest 2SN size, and is there a 4SP equivalent?
The smallest 2SN code is 3/16 inch at a 4.6 to 5.4 mm inside diameter, rated 41.5 MPa with 166.0 MPa burst on a 90 mm arc. There is no 4SP equivalent: the spiral range begins at 6.2 mm inside diameter, so 3/16 and 5/16 stay on 2SN.
Why does the bend radius grow by exactly 50 mm?
Because four spiral layers add wall thickness without adding bore, and the arc is set by the outside diameter over that wall. The step is 100 to 150 mm at 1/4 inch and 130 to 180 mm at 3/8, while outside diameter goes from 17.7 mm to a 17.1 to 18.7 mm band.
Why is 4SP worth more at 3/8 inch than at 1/4 inch?
Because the spiral gains pressure exactly where the single bore gets harder to reinforce. 2SN falls from 41.5 MPa at 3/16 inch to 33.0 MPa at 3/8, while 4SP holds 44.5 MPa at that bore, so the gap widens from 50 bar to 115 bar as the bore grows.
Which class for a 400 bar circuit on 3/8 hose?
4SP. 2SN at 3/8 inch is 330 bar, so a 400 bar duty is above its rating, while 4SP holds 445 bar with 178.0 MPa burst on a 9.3 to 10.1 mm inside diameter. The cost is a 180 mm arc rather than 130 mm.
Which class for a 350 bar mobile circuit on 3/16 hose?
2SN, because it is the only option. The 3/16 code is rated 41.5 MPa (415 bar) with 166.0 MPa burst and a 90 mm arc, and the 4SP range starts at 6.2 mm, so there is no spiral hose to upgrade to at that bore.
What is the minimum order and lead time?
100 m per size, cut to length, across 4.6 mm to 10.1 mm inside diameter on 2SN. Production runs about 20 days from confirmation, and both classes ship crimped and pressure-tested with metric, BSP, JIC or ORFS ends.
What do the two classes cost per metre?
Price tracks the wire: 2SN runs 0.33 kg/m at 3/16 inch to 0.6 kg/m at 3/8, and 4SP carries four spiral layers at 0.55 to 0.75 kg/m on the same bores. Samples of either class are cut free, and a firm figure follows bore, length, ends and destination.
